Case Study: Pennard Innovative Housing, Down to Earth Project and Coastal Housing
The award-winning Down to Earth Project collaborated with Coastal Housing to construct six semi-detached, 2-bedroom homes within the new Hedgerows social housing development in Pennard.
Down to Earth Project is a social enterprise specialising in sustainability education and eco building. Their approach is to combine the use of traditional and sustainable building techniques with skills training for disadvantaged and vulnerable people. Following delays during the pandemic, work started on the houses in Autumn 2020 and was completed in June 2021. The scheme was funded through the Welsh Government Innovative Housing Programme and is entirely built with Welsh timber and using natural insulation. The houses are also described as “homes as power stations” as they generate more electricity than they consume. To find out more about the development - click here.
