Case Study: S&C Electric Ltd
The work of S&C Electric Company is largely based around making the National Grid more efficient and reliable, and to enable renewable energy systems to be connected. So, in that sense is linked to reducing carbon.
The company holds ISO 14001 Accreditation and works closely with its parent company based in Chicago, USA on measuring their UK carbon emissions and business sustainability. Each year, the company sets objectives to achieve the reduction of its carbon emissions. The company implemented an employee awareness programme highlighting the importance of energy efficiency practices such as switching off lights and monitors when not in use. S&C also donates annually to local charities to offset its carbon emissions. One major policy change was to encourage the use of public transport and increase the use of video conferencing and remote diagnostics to reduce the need for travel. It has been estimated that the change in their travel practices has saved the company £70,000 over a year and significantly reduced their carbon footprint. In 2018, S&C set the goal to divert 99% of waste generated from their global operations from landfills. This ambitious goal required substantial planning, involvement, and dedication from team members across every functional area of the business. By the end of 2021, the company was diverting 98.4% of its global waste from landfill. (See video opposite). |
