Case Study: Retrofit Homes Demonstration Scheme (Craig Cefn Parc)
Swansea Council successfully bid for £1.5million of funding from the Welsh Government's Innovative Housing Programme (IHP) to install features such as solar panels and battery storage at both new and existing social housing developments.
The retrofit demonstration scheme in Craig Cefn Parc involves a row of six council-owned bungalows where a 'whole house approach' is being applied combining renewable energy supply, energy storage and demand reduction. The project has combined PV to generate energy located on both SE and SW facing roofs, a lithium ion battery and energy saving technologies and solutions including ground source heat pump, LED lighting, mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system, external wall insulation, new double glazed windows and loft insulation. The project will significantly reduce carbon emissions, energy bills for the occupants whilst providing a comfortable living environment for the occupants. The scheme is a partnership between Swansea Council and Cardiff University's Welsh School of Architecture. The homes have been monitored for 2 years before works were undertaken and will continue to be monitored to provide evidence on the impact of the measures. |
