Case Study: Innogy Wind Farms
Innogy UK Ltd is one of the UK's biggest renewable energy developers and operators, and a leading player in the generation of electricity from a range of renewable sources – wind, rivers, the sea and the land. They operate seven onshore wind farms, two offshore wind farms and seven hydro electric power plants in Wales. This includes the Ffynnon Oer wind farm near Resolven which started operating in 2006 with 16 turbines generating 32 megawatts of electricity.
In 2014, planning consent was received from Swansea Council to construct a 16-turbine wind farm on Mynydd y Gwair, capable of generating up to 48 megawatts of electricity. When fully operational, this wind farm could potentially generate enough energy to supply the needs of up to 24,700 average UK households. Innogy operates a small grants fund for projects around the Ffynnon Oer wind farm and, as part of the Mynydd y Gwair project, Innogy has pledged a Community Investment Fund to provide up to £240,000 per year for the operational life of the project, the equivalent of £5,000 per MW of electricity produced each year. |
